      Gr 4-7-The action is palpable and swift in this gripping adventure set in 1903. Nathalie Vaughan, 13, and her mother live in the Northwest Territory of Canada. Many townspeople work in the mine at Turtle Mountain. One morning, Nathalie is jolted awake by a rock slide that buries part of the town and its inhabitants, and also traps a group of miners inside the mountain. She and others work frantically to find survivors, and the teen heroically saves a baby. In addition to a description of her part in the rescue, there are perspectives from the trapped miners and from a railroad worker trying to stop an oncoming train. Readers are not spared the terror and impact of the rock slide, and the protagonist must wrestle with the horror that she has witnessed. An authors note contains information about and photographs of the real incident on which the story is based.
