It's beginning to look a lot like murder at the Pine Hills Christmas extravaganza...

Krissy Hancock is staying in her adopted hometown of Pine Hills, Ohio, for Christmas this year—and she even has a whole week off from her combination bookstore-café. But a killer is about to dampen her spirits.

Unfortunately, Krissy's been roped into filling in for a sick elf in the local holiday musical extravaganza. With a demanding director, backstage gossip, and two men in fierce competition for the starring role, it isn't all sweetness and Christmas lights. Then a murder puts a stop to the production, and Krissy is faced with a pageant of suspects.

Could her ex-boyfriend, a fellow elf, really be the culprit as the police are claiming? Or will the actor playing Santa be trading his red suit for an orange jumpsuit? When her behind-the-scenes investigation starts getting dangerous, the only thing Krissy really wants is to make it to Christmas dinner alive. But first she'll have to finish wrapping up this case...

A foray into community theater endangers the life of an Ohio sleuth.Krissy Hancock's plan to spend at least part of Christmas in California with her father is derailed when he calls and announces his plan to go to the Swiss Alps with a woman he's dating. When Krissy's friend Vicki, who co-owns their coffee shop/bookstore, insists that she take the time off after all, her unexpected vacation leads to her reluctantly playing an elf in a Christmas play festooned with complications. Lawrence, the hard-driving director of the Pine Hills Community Theater, expects perfection from his motley crew. Krissy is shocked when she arrives for her first rehearsal to find her former boyfriend Robert Dunhill in the cast along with his latest squeeze, Trisha, who's playing Mrs. Claus. The former Santa, Randy Winter, was fired for heavy drinking, and the new Santa is in Robert's bad books for hitting on Trisha. So when Santa Chuck is stabbed to death, the police arrest Robert, who ran off before they arrived. Robert, who knows Krissy's reputation as a sleuth (Death by Vanilla Latte, 2017, etc.), begs her to investigate over the objections of her former crush police officer Paul Dalton and the rest of the Pine Hills police. Of course the show must go on, giving Krissy plenty of opportunities to snoop around the theater and learn who else may have wanted Chuck dead. The list is longer than she thought it might be. Luckily, she's still off from her job, and her current boyfriend is a busy doctor, so she has every chance of finding the killer before he finds her. Fans may savor the details of the heroine's everyday life, but Erickson's fascination with them does slow down the action.

Krissy Hancock, owner of a bookstore cafe in Pine Hills, OH, is back in her fifth outing (after Death by Vanilla Latte). She's disappointed that she won't be heading to California to visit her father for the holidays since he's made other plans, but her staycation won't be dull. Talked into filling in as an elf in the local holiday musical, Krissy has to deal with a demanding director and a lecherous actor, as well as her former boyfriend and his new girlfriend. When the actor is murdered in the theater, there are several suspects, including her ex, who flees the scene but ends up at Krissy's house begging for help. She gives in and starts some amateur investigating. VERDICT A Christmas cozy for fans of the series, but not a standout from the usual holiday crime fiction fare.
