Bestselling author Jonathan Maberry's Glimpse is a chilling audiobook thriller that explores what happens when reality and nightmares converge, and how far one will go to protect the innocent when their own brain is a threat.
Rain Thomas is a mess. Seven years an addict and three difficult years clean. Racked by guilt for the baby she gave up for adoption when she was sixteen. Still grieving for the boy's father who died in Iraq. Alone, discarded by her family, with only the damaged members of her narcotics anonymous meetings as friends. Them, and the voices in her head. One morning, on the way to a much-needed job interview, she borrows reading glasses to review her resume. There is a small crack in one lens and through that damaged slice of glass she sees a young boy go running down the aisle of the subway train. Is he screaming with laughter or just screaming? When she tries to find the boy, he's gone and no one has seen him.
The day spins out of control. Rain loses whole chunks of time. The voices she hears are telling her horrible things. And Doctor Nine, a spectral boogey man conjured in drug induced hallucinogens is now hunting her in the real world. Doctor Nine is also chasing that boy. A boy who looks so much like Rain's dead boyfriend. Unsure whether she is insane or if the world itself is broken, Rain begins a mother's quest for her lost child through a world where reality and nightmare are in a head-on collision. How far will one person go to save someone they love?

New Yorker Rain Thomas, the tormented heroine of this uneven supernatural thriller from bestseller Maberry (Ghost Road Blues), had sex for the first time at 15 with 18-year-old Noah, who shipped off to Iraq the next day. She later learned that she was pregnant and that Noah has died in an explosion. Under pressure, Rain gave up their baby for adoption. Years later, she still grieves for Noah and feels guilty about giving up the baby. Then things start to get really bad. She arrives early for a job interview, only to be told that she’s almost 24 hours late. Her disorientation at having blacked out and lost an entire day is compounded when she concludes that she hallucinated an encounter with an old woman who gave her a pair of glasses with a crack in one lens that have unusual properties: they allow her to see a boy who looks a lot like Noah. Maberry sympathetically depicts Rain’s struggle to maintain her sanity, but familiar genre material, including Rain’s battle with an evil figure whose name should not be uttered, soon overshadows the initially moving human story.

Listeners will sit tight as Emma Galvin uses her narration skills to draw them into the madness of this dark story. Having given up her newborn son as a teenager and then descending into the world of illicit drug use have left Rain scarred. And now strange things are happening, but maybe she's not alone. She often find solace in her friends who met each other in Narcotics Anonymous. Her realization that they're all experiencing some of the same crazy stuff she is makes her certain that it isn't crazy--or maybe it is--but it's also real. As the story continues, listeners will enjoy hearing the puzzle pieces coming together. A.K. © AudioFile 2018, Portland, Maine
